How to Play Cool When Your Mom Catches You Buying Her B-Day Present

9.08.2011

True story (which requires a really long title because no other will sufice).

On my way home from work tonight, I stopped at JCrew to buy my mom a birthday present. Her birthday is Tuesday, so it was definitely time to go shopping. I'd just finished picking out her gift when I noticed the large sale section in the back. When it comes to shopping, I'm kind of like this...

Anyhow, I was picking out a really cute tank top when all of a sudden my mom walks around the corner!

Let me just say, thank goodness I wasn't still holding her gift. I'd set it down so I'd have two free hands to shop the sale. So her gift is still a mystery. I decided to play it cool. This was our conversation:

Me: "Mom, what are you doing here?!"
Mom: "Your sister needed some new clothes, so we've been shopping all day. She's around the corner talking to a friend".
Me: "Oh, how funny. I'm here to buy your birthday present" (Okay, so not really that cool of me).
Mom: "What? Oh, you shouldn't have!"
Me: "Can you go hide in a dressing room or something so I can go buy it real fast?"
Mom: "Um...okay?"

And then I bought her this totally awesome gift. I'd tell you what it is, but there's a good chance she's the one person who reads my blog. Mystery gift to be revealed next week. Stay tuned.
